The PEN Institute offers online courses in three formats: Group Instruction, One-on-One Instruction, and Lesson Packs (self-guided study). Webinars, Mentoring, and Second Pass services are also available.
Dozens of Courses Available
Our online courses give you the opportunity to learn wherever you are and whenever is most convenient for you!
Whether you are just beginning your editing career or are looking for an advanced class to update your skills, we have courses for you. Courses are scheduled all throughout the year. Because our courses are online and extremely flexible, we have students from all across the world attend The PEN Institute.
Group Courses
Group Courses include the lesson material, optional homework, additional instructor handouts, a group forum to learn from other students, and direct feedback from the instructor. Group courses are scheduled throughout the year and administered via Google Groups.
One-on-One Instruction
This option includes the lesson material, homework assignments, additional instructor handouts, and one-on-one mentoring from the instructor.
Boot Camp Courses
Boot Camp 401 courses are unique; they are designed to give you real-life experience editing material. They are hands-on courses to give you confidence and experience editing. There are no lessons—only editing exercises that are reviewed by an experienced editor who will give you feedback.
Ideally, students should take the 101, 201, and 301 track of courses before registering for a Boot Camp course.
Individual Mentoring
Working with a mentor who is an experienced professional can help guide you through your editing journey. Mentors provide knowledge and guidance, as well as help stimulate personal and professional growth. With individual mentoring, you work personally with your fiction or nonfiction mentor for one-hour sessions at a time.
Lesson Packs
Lesson Packs include the lesson material in pdf format for self-guided study. There are no group interaction, homework assignments, or instructor feedback provided with the Lesson Packs. Purchase and download the course material to learn anytime, anywhere.
Lesson Pack Bundles
Lesson Pack Bundles are three or more Lesson Packs purchased together for a savings of 10 percent.
Webinars
Webinars are downloadable videos and do not include instructor feedback. Students will be given access to the videos within 24 hours of purchase.
Second Pass
This service will provide feedback to the editor about an editing project. Any editor, regardless of experience level, can submit a ten-page edit as a Microsoft Word document, complete with Track Changes and Comments, and receive an evaluation of their work.
