After seventeen years at Baker Publishing Group, senior trade editor Barb Barnes retired to freelancing in May 2023, doing line editing, copyediting, and proofreading. While at Baker/Revell, she worked with nonfiction authors such as Michael Hyatt, Jonathan Catherman, Chip Ingram, and Nancy Pearcy. Fiction authors included Lynette Eason, James Hannibal, Suzanne Woods Fisher, Joanna Politano, Jane Kirkpatrick, and Ann Gabhart. Her passion and primary focus is fiction line editing and copyediting, and she continues to work with several of those Revell authors.
Before BPG, she freelance proofread and copyedited for Zondervan and Kregel for ten years. Prior to that, she worked in TV production in Pittsburgh and Virginia Beach for a dozen years. Then, as a stay-at-home mom, she started a desktop-publishing business; much of her work was typing and proofing papers for grad students, using Turabian, MLA, and APA styles. She was and continues to be an advocate for freelancers and the challenges they face when working for in-house editors, and enjoys mentoring younger folk in the trade. Contrary to her in-house English-major teammates, she holds a degree in social work.
She and her hubby live outside of Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she remains a die-hard Steeler fan
