In this eight-week Developmental Editing Mastery course, participants will acquire a comprehensive set of skills and knowledge to become proficient developmental editors. This curriculum elevates your foundational understanding by exploring your current knowledge of developmental editing, teaching effective techniques for conducting author interviews, assessing your unique skills that define your editing style, reviewing strategies for securing suitable jobs, and providing practical steps for managing a client’s manuscript. Through hands-on exercises and case studies, participants will delve into advanced manuscript analysis concepts, go deeper into the intricacies of plot, character development, and different point-of-view options. Additionally, the course addresses miscellaneous considerations relevant to freelance editors. Participants will conclude the course equipped with practical tools and checklists they can immediately apply to their business. They will develop a well-rounded understanding of developmental editing, gaining confidence and proficiency in navigating the complexities of the freelance developmental editing process.

Participants will practice developmental editing techniques on a 38K manuscript.

Format: This is the Group Course format, which includes an email group discussion and instructor feedback. This course will be conducted via Groups.io.

Prerequisite: Students must have either taken both the PEN Institute’s Fiction Editing Fundamentals Parts 1 and 2 courses or have equivalent knowledge of fiction editing

Level: Advanced

Base price: $360 (members of The Christian PEN receive discounts)

Course length: This course is eight lessons. It begins on February 9 and runs to March 30, 2026.

    As an aspiring developmental editor, I found this course essential. But the prerequisites are important. I had little to no actual editing experience before taking this course, but I had taken the beginner and intermediate courses, as well as several other courses from the PEN Institute. Also, I’m a writer, and I’ve read a bunch of craft books on writing. All that to say, don’t take this course if you’re not really clear on what a developmental editor is looking for. But if you’ve got that covered, and you’re ready to try your hand at what you’ve learned, take this course! It’s a wonderful hands-on opportunity, and the group aspect means you can learn from your fellow students as well. For me, it was great fun to get into a manuscript, it was rewarding hard work, and it empowered me by helping me see where my strengths and weaknesses lie.

    I took the one-on-one course with Joleen Graumann, and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

    This class is more than just another editing course. It not only teaches you how to edit a manuscript; it also covers topics such as finding clients, preparing contracts, doing sample edits, and writing editorial letters. With the one-on-one email format, Joleen gave me personalized feedback on my assignments and manuscript comments. Her responses were incredibly helpful and encouraging. She patiently took the time to answer my questions, demonstrating that she really cared about me as a student and a growing editor. In addition, practicing my skills on an actual manuscript gave me crucial hands-on experience that helped me know I was going in the right direction. Throughout the course, the flexible format allowed me to take my time and learn the information without feeling rushed in any way.
