Line Editing Essentials Group Course

Our Line Editing Essentials course trains editors to master revision at the sentence and paragraph level, a deeper scope than copyediting. Further, the course will teach the difference between line editing and copyediting. This course equips editors at all levels with practical techniques to help writers produce polished, compelling, memorable, and effective writing.

In this course, editors will learn sentence- and paragraph-level editing skills. The student will be guided through crafting and evaluating titles that will lead to professional SEO analysis and AI search visibility. Additionally, the student will learn to diagnose and repair redundancy, repetition, and underuse of transitional words while eliminating wordiness and tightening syntax to improve readability. A review of sentence structure, verb choice, clarity, and phrasing will teach how to transform bloated writing into writing that communicates more effectively.

In the final phase, the course will teach how to edit for flow and continuity, the defining mark of a strong line editor. This will include a review of how to employ verb tenses properly, how to spot tense shifts, how to maintain tense consistency, and how to diagnose other elements that disrupt flow. Additional areas to be discussed include pacing the story and moving from passive to active voice. At the conclusion of the Line Editing Essentials course, the editor can deliver edits that preserve the author’s voice while dramatically improving clarity, structure, and flow.
