Substantive Editing for Fiction – Intermediate GROUP COURSE

(2 customer reviews)

$240.00

By now you know (and are mastering!) the basics of fiction so you can help authors polish their manuscripts, but how do you apply that knowledge and actually provide substantive fiction edits for others?

It would be wonderful if all authors and editors wanted and expected the same things, but that rarely happens. That’s why it’s important to understand not only what services you want to provide, but also how to get jobs, perform them professionally, and communicate well with your clients.

Substantive Editing for Fiction (SEF) Intermediate is a six-week course that will help you launch and maintain your substantive fiction editing career. Topics include:

  • What Exactly is a Substantive Fiction Edit (and how it is different from other edits)?
  • Practical Tips for Performing a Substantive Fiction Edit
  • Getting the Job (including finding leads, writing bids, and setting rates)
  • Common Substantive Editing Pitfalls and Fiction-Writing Mistakes
  • Working Well with Challenging Clients
  • The Author/Editor Relationship

Combining your knowledge from SEF Basics with the information in Intermediate will give you the tools you need to confidently launch your substantive fiction editing business!

The lessons were clear and very much met my expectations. There was a variety of assignments. The lessons were helpful and necessary.

A follow up to the first two courses in this series, SEF-301 challenged me. Karin Beery provided excellent, specific feedback for my substantive editing homework assignments. On top of the information about substantive editing itself, the course provided preparation for offering substantive editing as a service. Between the two types of instruction, I gained confidence in my ability to perform this type of editing and handle the process with my clients. Thanks you for another great course! I plan to round out the learning with SEF-401 when it becomes available.
