Substantive Editing for Fiction 101 ONE-ON-ONE INSTRUCTION

(5 customer reviews)

Good novels don’t just happen—they endure several revisions before publishing, and the first round of edits is usually the substantive edit.

What is a substantive fiction edit? Sometimes called a macro edit, it’s the “big picture” edit—before the copyeditor looks at each punctuation marks and notation, the substantive editor looks at the whole book: characters, pacing, plotlines, point of view, setting, etc., as well as keeping an eye on punctuation, grammar, and more.

In Substantive Fiction Editing 101, we’ll look at the basics of a well-written novel and learn how to help our authors learn and incorporate those techniques. The class includes everything from understanding the Christian fiction market and its genres, learning the elements of an effective substantive edit, and mastering the basics of Christian fiction—showing versus telling, characterization, plot, and formatting.

  1. Sarah Tipton

The instructor worked to make sure I understood everything. I found everything useful to think about and be aware of as I begin editing. I most liked the one-on-one format and the instructor’s timely responses.

  2. Tracy Donley

Karin is very good about explaining a concept clearly and then offering examples that anyone can understand. I especially loved the individualized attention! The way the course is designed—with the lessons and examples offering clear information and then the assignments being doable and interesting—is very thoughtfully designed. I felt the assignment load was reasonable and helpful, challenging without being overwhelming. Karin’s feedback is probably my very favorite part.

  3. Sydney Schlueter

The course was very informative, and the assignments were relevant, useful, and well balanced. The instructor was great at answering questions and providing additional references. If I had questions, she did a great job explaining concepts and providing additional examples. The lessons were fun to read, and the assignments were varied and always applicable. This is a great course to take, if you’re new to substantive editing.

  4. Patricia A. Blake
