When you receive an editing job, you will typically be asked to do a specific type of edit. But what if the client doesn’t know what their writing needs? Or what if the type of editing they are asking for isn’t the right one?

How do you handle these situations professionally and knowledgeably? In this course, you will learn the key elements of various types of editing. This information will equip you to identify the correct edit for the projects you receive.

This course covers the three standard types of editing, as well as in what order you should do each level. You will learn how to identify when a manuscript needs developmental editing, copyediting, or proofreading for both nonfiction and fiction writing. We will review the specifics for each of the six scenarios above and evaluate writing examples for each. We will also discuss how to professionally communicate your analysis with your client, give them the correct resources, and prepare for their response. As a side bonus, you will have a chance to try out each different type of editing and see what interests you most.
